Get the ClosureFast™ Advantage Today

If you're dealing with discomfort from varicose veins, it could be a sign of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Over 30 million people in the U.S. are affected by varicose veins or CVI, yet only about 1.9 million seek treatment each year. Without intervention, symptoms like leg swelling, skin damage, and ulcers can worsen, leading to debilitating effects that greatly impact your quality of life.

The good news is that with the right treatment, these symptoms can be managed, and the ClosureFast™ procedure offered by Advanced Cardiology and Vein Center of South Jersey is a highly effective solution to help restore your health and comfort.

When to Seek Treatment

Your venous system consists of three types of veins: superficial veins (close to the skin's surface), deep veins (located deeper in the leg), and perforator veins (bridged between the deep and superficial veins). ClosureFast™ targets venous reflux in the superficial venous system, which is often the root cause of painful varicose veins.

Healthy veins have valves that regulate blood flow back to the heart. Venous reflux disease occurs when these valves fail, causing blood to pool in the legs, leading to swelling, discomfort, and other symptoms. Some common signs of venous reflux disease include:

  • Varicose veins
  • Leg or ankle swelling
  • Leg heaviness or fatigue
  • Burning or itching skin
  • Restless legs
  • Skin changes or rashes
  • Leg pain, aching, or cramping
  • Ulcers or open sores

Several factors can contribute to venous reflux, including:

  • Age
  • Family history
  • Multiple pregnancies or history of pregnancy
  • Prolonged standing and sitting
  • Gender
  • Obesity
  • Trauma
  • Smoking
  • Heavy lifting
  • History of DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)

When the valves in your veins malfunction, blood can flow backward, increasing pressure in the veins. If left untreated, this condition can worsen and develop into chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), which can result in ulcers and more severe complications. We use ultrasound to assess your legs and determine if you have venous reflux.

The Procedure

The ClosureFast™ procedure is a minimally invasive treatment performed on an outpatient basis. The procedure takes only 30-45 minutes, and your physician will use ultrasound to guide a small catheter into the affected vein through a tiny puncture in the skin. The catheter delivers heat to the vein, causing it to shrink and close. This seals the vein, alleviating swelling and other symptoms. Blood will then reroute through healthy veins, often leading to a complete cure.

After the procedure, a simple bandage will cover the insertion site, and you may be given compression stockings to aid healing. Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days. We may recommend avoiding extended standing or strenuous activities for a short time following the procedure.

FAQs

  • Is the ClosureFast™ procedure painful?

Most patients experience little to no pain during the ClosureFast™ procedure. Your doctor will typically use a local or regional anesthetic to numb the treatment area, ensuring a comfortable experience.

  • How soon can I return to my normal activities?

Recovery time is generally quicker with the ClosureFast™ procedure compared to traditional vein stripping or laser treatments. Most patients can resume normal activities within just a few days. However, for the next few weeks, your vein specialist may recommend light walking and advise against heavy lifting or long periods of standing

  • When will I start to notice improvements in my symptoms?

Most patients notice a significant improvement in their symptoms within one to two weeks after the procedure.

  • Will there be any scarring, bruising, or swelling after the procedure?

After the ClosureFast™ procedure, most patients experience minimal to no scarring, bruising, or swelling.

  • How does the ClosureFast™ procedure compare to endovenous laser treatment?

While both the ClosureFast™ procedure and 980 nm endovenous laser ablation are minimally invasive, a multicenter study found that ClosureFast™ resulted in less pain, bruising, and complications. Patients who had the ClosureFast™ procedure also reported faster improvements in quality of life—up to four times quicker than those treated with the 980 nm laser.

  • How does the ClosureFast™ procedure differ from vein stripping?

Vein stripping involves making incisions in the groin and calf and physically removing the diseased vein. In contrast, the ClosureFast™ procedure only requires no incision at the insertion site, where the vein is treated and left in place. This minimally invasive technique typically leads to less pain and bruising than traditional vein stripping.

  • Is the ClosureFast™ procedure covered by insurance?

Many insurance providers cover the ClosureFast™ procedure, either partially or fully. Coverage varies, so it's important to check with your insurance company ahead of time to confirm your benefits for this treatment.
