Varithena® - The Innovative Vein Treatment

At Advanced Cardiology and Vein Center of South Jersey, we offer Varithena® therapy as an effective, non-surgical solution for treating varicose veins and improving overall vein health. Varithena® is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a specially formulated foam to target and close off problematic veins, allowing healthy veins to take over blood flow.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are swollen, often bluish, and twisted veins that bulge just beneath the surface of the skin. This common condition affects both men and women and can vary in severity.

Several factors may increase your risk of developing varicose veins, including a family history, aging, being overweight or obese, history of pregnancy, standing and sitting for extended periods due to work or lifestyle, and history of leg trauma.

Leg veins contain tiny valves that help blood flow upward toward the heart, working against gravity. When these valves weaken or fail, blood can flow backward and pool in the veins, causing the formation of varicose veins. Although varicose veins are not always visible, they can cause discomfort and various symptoms, such as:

  • Heaviness
  • Swelling
  • Itching
  • Aching
  • Throbbing
  • Cramping (Charlie horse)
  • Burning
  • Tingling/numbness
  • Restless legs

What Is Varithena®?

If you’re ready to get back to the activities you love, Varithena® offers a nearly painless, minimally invasive solution. This gentle foam treatment is delivered with as few as 1-2 needle sticks, making it a convenient option for those seeking relief.

This procedure is quick, with little to no downtime, and can provide significant relief from symptoms such as swelling, aching, and fatigue in the legs. Our experienced team tailors the treatment to meet your specific needs, helping you achieve improved comfort and appearance without the need for invasive surgery.

In clinical trials, only 4.0% of patients reported pain at the injection or application site. Varithena®   effectively addresses both the physical symptoms and the visible appearance of varicose veins, helping you feel better and look better, without the need for more invasive procedures.

Why Choose Varithena®?

Unlike other treatments, Varithena® does not require incisions, sedation, or general anesthesia. It offers several advantages over thermal ablation:

  • It effectively treats veins of various sizes along the entire length of your leg.
  • There’s no need to insert a wire along the length of your vein.
  • It requires only one or two needle sticks per treatment.
  • It uses no heat during the procedure.

Additionally, Varithena® dissolves in the bloodstream after treatment, leaving nothing permanently behind in your vein.

The Procedure

A Fast, Nearly Painless Solution

Varicose vein treatment with Varithena® involves injecting a foam that causes the affected veins to close. This minimally invasive procedure is quick, usually taking less than an hour, and requires no incisions or stitches. In clinical trials, only 4.0% of patients reported pain at the injection or application site. Most patients achieve noticeable results with just a single treatment.

What to Expect During Treatment

Unlike other foam treatments, Varithena® is FDA-approved. During the session, your physician will inject the foam into the diseased veins, causing them to close and allowing blood to reroute through healthier veins.

Possible Side Effects

The most common side effects include mild leg pain or discomfort, bruising or pain at the injection site, and, in rare cases, blood clots in the leg veins. These are not the only potential side effects of Varithena®.

Varithena® is typically covered by most Medicare and insurance plans, though coverage may depend on the severity of your varicose veins and symptoms. We can find out if your insurance covers this medication.

What to Expect

In clinical studies, most patients treated with Varithena® saw significant improvements after just one treatment, including:

  • Relief from symptoms such as heaviness, achiness, swelling, throbbing, and itching
  • Enhanced appearance of veins, as reported by both patients and physicians
